Reaction: Randy Winn Has Been Fitted For Pinstripes

I'm just as surprised as you are.  Without getting into the Johnny Damon stuff, let's dig into what Winn brings to the Yankees.

Simply put, Randy Winn's a superb glove.  He's a general corner outfielder--meaning he can play either spot--and he's quite awesome at it.  His UZR/150 is a nifty 20.1, which compares favorably with Torii Hunter's UZR/150, which is actually a negative number.  (I'm throwing that out there to give non stat nerds some context.)

Now, can Winn play everyday?  In the AL?  For the Yankees?  Let me say this as clearly as possible: no.  Randy Winn is not an everyday player.  However, he might be a decent platoon option.

Winn hit .294/.354/.397 against righties in 2009 (472 PAs).  He's awful against lefties.  You might be saying, "He's no Ruth against righties!"  I nod and agree.  He's not a good hitter.

But he might a decent platoon option with Brett Gardner, who hit .291/.381/.400 against lefties.  Neither are great, but both would at least provide some offensive production while playing excellent defense.

I'll take that. The outfield defense--Winn/Gardner-Granderson-Swisher--should be good, and potentially a decent offensive option, too.  Plus, none of them are break-the-bank options.

Now, will Winn hit like Damon?  No.  But he's a considerably better defender.  Perhaps the Yankees wanted to add some defense and save a little money for next off season?  (I can't confirm that this guy and this guy are on Hal Steinbrenner's shopping list for next winter.)

But you know... I really can't rule out Damon being back despite the Winn signing.  I never listen to Brian Cashman's insistence upon a budget; if the Yankees want someone, they'll get him.  I don't think the Yankees look at left field and think, "Let's just go with a platoon!"  It might work, but the Yankees tend to like flashy stuff.

Moral of the story?  Winn and Gardner could be okay, but don't be surprised to see Johnny back in the Bronx.

Adam wants to play left field for the Yankees too.  Email him at adamdadkins@gmail.com with any suggestions.
